Archival history

With r.d. 1 April 1860, following the annexation of Tuscany to the Sardinian Kingdom, the Tuscan consulates and vice consulates still existing in the "ancient provinces of the Kingdom" definitively cease and are invited to put an end to their ancient functions.
The attributions are entrusted to the naval officers of the respective localities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turin establishes that the archives of the consular offices of Tuscany must be delivered to the Intendants of the district through a special inventory of all the papers, books and objects.
Only a few days later, on April 1860, the archive of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Consulate General in Genoa, was handed over by the former consul general Carlo Pietro Cecconi to the officer delegated for the purpose by the governor of the city of Genoa, and since then it is part of the fund Intendenza generale di Genoa, Archivio Amministrativo.

On the occasion of its deposit a precise list was compiled. Today it allows us to understand its structure and to reorder the documentation.

Scope and content

The archive has come to us almost in its entirety, only a few pieces are missing. They can be identified thanks to the presence of the deposit list.
The following documentation is preserved

  • the regulatory instruments (mainly printed material)
  • the institutional correspondence (incoming letters and copy book registers, a protocol)
  • the instruments of control and supervision on the movement of Tuscans subjects and foreigners to Tuscany
  • the instruments of control and supervision on the Merchant Navy
  • the papers aimed at the protection of Tuscan subjects and the documentation produced in the performance of notarial functions (notarial and authentication services)

The fond consist mainly of correspondence (files and copy-books) and registers.

System of arrangement

The architecture of the papers, received by the Intendenza of Genoa was not completely changed. However the documentation appears to have been partially reorganized. The reordering we publish is virtual.
The original structure of the archive of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in Genoa is readable through the deposit list which from now on will be called "ancient lists".

Finding aids

The archive was partially inventoried in the Archivio di Stato of Genoa web-site, called Ianua (https://ianua.arianna4.cloud/).

Thanks to this initial tool, which identify the folders containing the documentation produced by the Consulate, and to the ancient deposit lists, it was possible to proceed to the virtual reordering and to edit the inventory of the papers.
