Biographical history
1815 - The Institution of the Consulate General in Rome of the re-established Grand Duchy of Tuscany dates back to 1 March 1815, when the Secretariat of State in Florence appointed Marquis Filippo Bonadies Consul General in Rome. Bonadies had held the office of the Florentine Nation in Rome since May 1772 and represented the continuity between the ancient consular institution and the modern consular magistracy.
1819 - Bonadies is succeeded by Francesco Pandolfini, "commesso" in the Legation of Tuscany in Rome. The Consul retains his old post in the Legation: in this way the Consul's dependence on the Representation is made clear from the beginning. F. Pandolfini will keep his post at the Legation until 1846.
1853 - On July 1853 Pandolfini dies. On 30 September 1853 the Consulate is abolished. In its place, a consul chancellor was instituted, dependent on the Tuscan Legation. Instead of receiving consular rights, he would receive a salary and enjoy "restricted quarters" in the Palace of Florence. Francesco Pandolfini's son, Rodolfo, succeeded him. The vice-consulate was suppressed (see ASDMAE, LTRm, folder 104, file 34 "Istituzione di un posto di cancelliere console nell'I. e R. Legazione di Toscana in luogo del Consolato soppresso").
The series of succeeding consuls:
- Filippo Bonadies, Consul General, appointed 1 March 1815, + 3 June 1819
- Francesco Pandolfini, Consul General, appointed on 15 September 1819. + 1 July 1853

Scope and content
There are few papers from the period 1817-1819 and nothing remains of the previous period due to the non-delivery of the archive of the former consul Filippo Bonadies to the new Tuscan consul. The main correspondents of the papers are the Foreign Secretariat in Florence and the Governor of Livorno. Commercial and maritime subjects prevail; commendations from the Secretariat of Florence and requests for information about Tuscan subjects.

System of arrangement
The archive was well arranged even before its inventory was drawn up. The correspondence is preserved in files with original, light blue covers, on which the year, number and subject are written in beautiful calligraphy.
The archive also contains a register of the affairs (1817-1853) compiled during the Pandolfini administration, a register of maritime movements and seven little volumes or 'shipping' registers (1847-1849) compiled in the Consulate's Chancellery.
The preservation of the index of the affairs made it possible to rebuild the consistency of the entire archive. The register revealed the absence of papers from the entire year 1846 and part of 1849, and the removal of some files on 'political matters'.
Most of the missing files were found among the papers of the Legation, as was the entire year of 1846.
In drawing up the inventory, it was considered appropriate to give a single string numbering per archival unit, i.e. for files, registers, volumes. This numbering makes it possible to quantify the size of the fonds and to describe the archival units regardless of their physical location.
