System of arrangement
The papers have been cited by many scholars over time. It was therefore considered appropriate to proceed with a virtual arrangement, leaving the documentation in the historical locations.
According to the new arrangement the archive consists on seven nucleuses of papers with extremely variable consistency, sometimes divided into sub-series or groups of files
i) Institutional relations
The documentation consists of forwarded letter books; received letters; protocols; ‘general correspondence’.
The general correspondence subseries is a sort of ‘container’ of correspondence received from different interlocutors, year by year. Originally, the documents were arranged, as was customary, by type of correspondent (the various authorities at home (civil and military), dependent proconsulates, foreign consulates at the destination, local authorities, etc.). The groups of letters could cover several years, or, if the epistolary exchange was dense and substantial, a single calendar year.
ii) Civil status records.
This is a small nucleus of civil status records, collected in files. It should be noted that part of the registrations is included in ‘General correspondence’ (subseries of Institutional relations)
iii) The documentation produced as part of the surveillance of the Navy
iv) The documentation produced as part of the administrative management of the consulate.
It consists of registers
v) Consular affairs consisting, for the most part, of litigation (contentious)
vi) A small nucleus of documents testifying to the long regency of the Austrian consulate by Sardinian consular officials.
vii) Miscellaneous
A miscellany into which the residual files (4 large files) that could not be traced back to the previous series were merged
In the course of the reorganisation, a volume was found which clearly belongs to the papers of the Secretariat (then Ministry) of Foreign Affairs.
In drawing up the inventory it was deemed appropriate to give a single string numbering per archival unit, i.e. per file /register. This numbering makes it possible to quantify the consistency of the archive and to describe the files regardless of their physical location.
Inside the quotation marks are reported the original reference codes (numbers and/or dates)
